I am probably gonna post a thread about this, but this is a short summary of what i think about the sage.

The Sage started to bring peace to the world, but till the end of his life all of his plans failed.
Failed to bring peace to this world the Sage decides to create a grand scheme which would bring peace to the world but with force. This could be proven by how the Sharingan, Tablet, moon, Hatred between two brothers and the bijuus.
I am sure that some of you guys might not get this but you can ask me questions if you want.

I theorized that Hagoromo created the hatred between his two sons in order to give them a chance to understand each other fully, and to understand themselves that both their views where wrong. I think that Hagoromo figured out the way to peace right before he died, but he was never able to do anything with it. So he left the coming generations with the tools needed to figure it out on their own. Those tools were the Curse of Hatred and Will of Fire along with the Bijuu and Uchiha Table.

Hagoromo never managed to bring fourth peace. His mother was able to bring fourth a temporary peace and he sustained that further. However, it ended when he though people the use of Ninjutsu and they decided to use it for war instead of understanding.

Even with all that, he was still only a single man. True power isn't the power to cause explosions. True power is to never give up and work towards a goal, and to finally succeed in that goal.

Hagoromo believed that the path to true peace was understanding. That is why he failed, as true peace isn't just one side of the coin. The way to peace is through love and power, understanding and hatred towards each other. One cannot fully value peace unless one has lost it and been thrown into war.

he got the Rinnegan because of all the suffering that is why it is called the Samsara Eye.

They caused war both when he was alive and after, using the arts of Ninjutsu. Regardless if they did or not, peace that only lasts as long as someone fears someone isn't peace.

He suffered war, he suffered loss and he suffered failure. It was only after those which he understood how much peace really means, however he died before he could ever realise that ideal. Hagoromo also seemed like a lonely soul from what we've gathered, and its highly likely that he was never able to befriend The Juubi which is where he also failed.

What the Sage failed to realize was that even the Juubi has consciousness, and can be befriended.
And that is what Naruto will succeed in doing, and surpass the Sage of the six paths. but there is not gonna be a Juubi, just the nine bijuu's working together.

He failed to understand that you cannot simply remove the cause of hatred. You have to understand it, reason with it and balance it out. That is the essence of Yin and Yang. One cannot exist without the other, peace cannot exist without war, love cannot exist without hatred and so on.

Your talking like Nagato and Obito and not putting your trust in Naruto. If there is any such thing as peace, he will seize it and prove everyone wrong. Thats where madara and Hagoromo has given up,and that is where Naruto will surpass everyone.

Hagoromo's ideal is the exact same as Naruto's. Yet he failed, and you cannot succeed at something someone else failed at by doing the exact same. Naruto cannot bring peace himself, he is the Yang of true peace and Sasuke is the Yin of true peace. Cooperation, understanding and friendship is the way to true peace. That is why a single person cannot attain peace, Madara will fail, Obito failed, Nagato failed and Naruto will fail without Sasuke.
