I have always been wondering about the metaphorical and literal meaning of Hiruzen's last words before his death and different people have different interpretations:

"When the tree leaves dance, one shall find flames. The fire's shadow will illuminate the village, and once again, tree leaves shall bud anew."

Most people say that it means that among (young) Shinobi, one will become exceptional, special, magnificent and their ways will protect Konoha and make it an even better village by becoming Hokage. And, over time new (young) Shinobi will arise and the will of fire will be passed onto them. Examples: Naruto, Jiraiya, Minato, Kakashi

Others, fewer say that it means among (young) Shinobi, one will become evil, negatively great, against the village. Their ways would be neglected by the village and shown as a bad example. They would try and destroy the village which would make Konoha stronger each time it prevailed. However, there will always be a new generation of Shinobi to replace the bad ways of the old generation/protect from the evil Shinobi but there will still be evil Shinobi among ever new generation. Examples: Obito, Orochimaru, Sasuke

Which meaning do you believe to be correct (if any)? And do you think that those words were intended/directed towards Orochimaru himself?

I believe he pertains to the Will of Fire being transferred and carried out by the new generations... Old and great shinobis like him may die but he's sure that new shinobis will be born to replace them..

that's what I think =D

"When the tree leaves dance, one shall find flames"

- Tree leaves: Konoha as a village whole.
- Flames: referring to the Will of Fire.

"The fire's shadow will illuminate the village, and once again, tree leaves shall bud anew."

- Fire's shadow: the Hokage. (Literal translation)
- Tree leaves: the new shinobi of Konoha.

Basically, the Hokage passes down the Will of Fire to the next generation. Which is what Hiruzen did to Naruto's generation.

How symbolic and powerful, which is why he's my favorite Hokage.

So basically the first theory. Which is describing the good hearted Shinobi with the will of fire. I actually think it means that one too but who knows...

The new Hokage will illuminate the village, and pass down the will of fire to the young shinobi aka new buds.

not only that but he was basically saying, the new Hokage will carry on the leaf, and young shinobi (like Naruto) will rise up also. Since Orochimaru's purpose was to destroy the leaf and its people.

I like the second meaning and yes I believe it was directed to the likes of Obito, Oro and Sasuke. Maybe this is also foreshadows Sasuke becoming Hokage. I don't want that to happen but while reading this it makes sense. I mean think about it like this:

"The fire's shadow will illuminate the village" - Sasuke has been associated with shadows (in a way, more specifically the path of darkness) and flames. His goal is to change the village, but we can see he's going to do that as Hokage while continuing down a dark path, thus his shadow will illuminate the village.

"Tree leaves shall bud anew" - Sasuke will have crushed the old system, and created a new one. OR Naruto will ultimately kill him and give birth to a new system. Something along those lines

That's just my interpretation and sort of prediction. I don't actually want that to happen but it makes sense (to me)

Actually this makes much more sense than my interpretation. I forgot Hokage literally means Fire Shadow

Let me give you a more literal meaning instead of over complicating it and trying to make connections that are laughable.

When the tree leaves dance- Tree leaves are Konoha shinobi, dancing is most probably referring to fighting to protect the village.

One shall find flames- This is clearly in reference to the display of the Will of Fire by these Shinobi who are fighting.

The fire's shadow will illuminate the village- The Will of these Shinobi who passed away or sacrificed themselves will have an impact on everyone in the village.

Tree leaves will bud anew- This is self explanatory. More shinobi who possess that Will shall be born.

Fun fact: If it was taken literaly, the Leaf Village would be a Sequoia Tree.

It probably means the Will of Fire.
