Personally, it wasn't an asspul like people claim it is. The truth why it wasn't explained is that kishimoto expected us to guess why he was able to use it but apparently we didn't and said there was no logic.
3 reasons why people think that susanoo is asspull:
1) They understimate madara's mastery of susanoo to the likes of sasuke and itachi
2) They have never seen a susanoo activated without the sharingan
3) They consider what the manga says earlier as absolute facts. Even if kishimoto, the one who is supposed to create facts, try to add more detail to what he has said earlier, they would refute the facts.
Well, in fiction, there is no asspull and everything can be explained. It's preferrable to not use logic in manga. Many times, something complex considered a plot hole gets explained later easily. Why? This is because in all cases, anything can be used as explanation as long as it stands on a solid foundation..
Madara's susanoo can be explained easily but I have to take examples to make you understand the innermost truth. Madara is the most frequent user of susanoo besides sasuke. So, he will surely have mastered it over years if he has the EMS. A mastery of the technique slightly diminish the needs for the initial requirements. Madara was able to use susanoo without eyes. However, he could not use perfect susanoo. This in itself points that normal susanoo was an effortless technique to madara.
Note that Madara without sharingan indeed have restrictions. If he could use PS, he would have done it because he was near the point of getting sealed and he was faced by several bijuus. Do you think he would have gone easy on them? No. So he could use susanoo but not ps. There is no asspull by kishimoto. If kishimoto was creating plot holes, why would he stop madara from using PS? It's just that he knows that someone who mastered the sharingan like madara can use susanoo but not to its full extent.
As said before, an example is crucial for deeper understanding. Before, ninjas require several hand seals to do techniques. But as they mastered it, the requirements diminished and some could do it with a few hand seals or with none at all. Manga stated in part 1 that seals were crucial for ninjutsu. It is true indeed but it can also be understood why some ninjas can use it without hand seals.
Similarly, the same concept applies to Madara. He do not need his eyes for small techniques but need it for rinbo hengoku or other OP jutsu.
