Did Madara know someone with gates?

Basically the title, he commented today when gai used the 7th gate that he is underestimating him if he's not using red steam. It made me wonder who of the possible choices had gates back when Madara was around.

Specifically if it was Hashi/Tobirama or just some random. Maybe I missed something?

considering he was part of konoha and all those scrolls in konoha contained jutsu it wouldnt be to much of a surprise if he knows about the 8 gates

If he helped konaha develop how did they have such a wide range of scrolls with documented jutsu? Someone had to know it for it to be documented you can't just have justu off the bat like that in archives.

I wish we knew though the origins of the gates have always interested me and how gai got them. So many of these guys have some cool abilities and it's just like how were you authorized to find and learn these.
