In this theory I will explain how Naruto and Hunter x Hunter are part of the same universe. Before you immediately dismiss this theory, I urge you to first read it and see what I am talking about.
The Universes: Past and Present
Both Naruto and HxH take place in an alternate Universe. These two alternate Universes have several things in common. Firstly, they contain a mixture of Feudal and Modern technology. Secondly, they have places that are fictional, but are similar to our Universe. (Most lands in Naruto are like Japan, HxH has Yorknew City,which is like New York City).
In this Universe, HxH takes place in the future of Naruto. Naruto is this fictional universe's Feudal Era. Feudal weapons are used and there are no modern forms of transportation. However the Narutoverse has electricity and computers and Modern Medical Technology.
The HxH Universe is a few centuries later. Modern weapons such as guns have become more common. Planes and cars have been invented. However, some old fashion weapons are used such as Kurapika's blades as well as many others.
Nen and Ninjutsu
Nen and Ninjutsu have very similar rules to how they work. They are not identical, but this is due to changes over time as I will explain.
First let's talk about how one acquires these powers. From what we've seen, every human contains some amounts of Aura or chakra. However, only those who are trained to use it can master its powers. Furthermore, there are certain clans such as the Uchiha, Senju, Uzumaki,Kurta (a descendant of the Uchiha: see below) who are born with natural abilities with these powers.
Certain techniques are strikingly similar. While there are many to be discussed, I will only bring up one. The chakra chains. These chains can do many things such as stop an opponent and seal his aura/chakra. This was used by Kushina, Karin, Obito, Madara, and Kurapika.
As Kakashi explained, there are two ways to classify Ninjutsu, Form and Nature. The Form refers to how the nen or ninjutsu manifests itself, and Nature refers to what type of element it uses.
In the Narutoverse, ninjutsu was classified in terms of both form and Nature, but Nature was more significant. However by the time we get to the period of HxH, form becomes the dominant classification.
Nature is still used, like Killua's lightning style, but the generation has mostly forgotten it. However there are advantages to this classification. For example, no one ever realized that Rock Lee was an Enhancer and could not use any other type of form, and so assumed he couldn't use ninjutsu.
Summoning Animals and the Chimera Ants
The Chimera Ants are strikingly similar to a summoning animal/ninja animal from the Narutoverse. For one thing, they are native to a certain area. Just like Summoning animals, the Chimera ants have the ability to use Nen. Also, just like there are small toads and large toads, so too there are tiny Chimera ants and large ones.
The Uchiha and the Kurta
The Kurta are clearly descended from the Uchiha. Their eyes have very similar properties. No, they are not identical, but we know ocular Jutsu changes over time. For example the elder son of SO6P's eyes look different from the sharingan.
Both of these eyes stem from powerful emotion.
Both are red. Both eyes give the user the ability to perform all types of different techniques: Kakashi was able to copy many different types of Ninjutsu, and Kurapika is able to use all forms of Nen
.
