Hello all, and welcome to my fantastic STRAWHATS GREATEST MOMENTS, PTS thread!! I decided to make this thread as a celebration of finally finishing the entire first part of One Piece, from chapter 1 to 597. It took me 2 years (only because I got started mid summer last year, but I had serious consistency problems and recently picked it back up last November), and I can say it was good time spent.
Prior to this, I was an absolute diehard Naruto fan and used to use super crappy puns like ‘One Piece of shit’ before even seriously reading it. But one day I was bored and feeling nostalgic, so I was reminiscing to those old Toonami days. Now before I picked up the manga, the last thing related to One Piece I ever remember seeing was something about the Strawhats traveling through the forest, and some really big guy (Kuma) trying to kill them all. At that time as well, back in those 5th grade days, I was a Naruto junkie and he was approaching the time skip. I think the reason I never picked up on One Piece was because the designs came off to me as extremely lame and corny. The plot was a little hard for me to follow as well, partially because I was dropping in and out of the series, and was switching the channel between that and Shadow The Hedgehog on my Gamecube, beating the final boss. So I got back interested, and decided to check out the manga.
I was pleasantly surprised to see I wasn’t able to just drop in any chapter I wanted to in the up to date chapter and figure out what was going on, I was confused as heck. So it was a tough choice, but I decided to go back all the way to chapter 1 and read it up to the current chapter. And while reading through, I was driven through all types of emotions, much, much more heightened than anything I’d experienced in Naruto. I experienced fury, with brats such as Helmeppo acting like Mr. Man because his dad was a Marine, weirdness and indifference in opinion on such odd, creative designs that were very new to me, such as the lion cat guy from Buggys crew, the yearning for justice through moments such as the dog from the Buggy arc guarding his shop and getting beat up, and the satisfaction of seeing various smug ******* villains get what they deserve.
So to organize the moments that made me jump out of my seat and start screaming from hype, I organized folders of the Strawhats and their greatest moments to bring to you all. Hope you enjoy!!!!!

LUFFY
This guy has tons, but I had to restrict it to 10. It was a tough choice, and I’d like to give a shoutout to my mans SenjuItama and _____ for helping me with these. Now I won’t list any of these in order of best to least best, but instead in order of when they occurred. So to start off, the very first moment,
[1] HELMEPPO SUCKER PUNCH
Now I’m not a fan of sucker punches, but Luffy is always the exception since it wouldn’t matter if his opponent saw it coming or not. When I first saw this, I got so hype because of how much he deserved it. That guy was about to execute a hero who saved a little girl after making a deal with him. Fortunately, Luffy overheard the discussion and let his reflexes of justice take over. The first great moment of a great manga.
[2]LUFFY THE SWORDSMAN
This moment, I found to be both genius on Odas part, as well as hilarious on Luffys part, I died on this page. I mean Luffy was in the heat of a battle with Arlong, practically the King of East Blue, and after getting knocked back, he grabbed some swords and just started flailing them around like ‘wtf am I doing’. Then in the middle of it all, he tossed out one, backhanded this dude in the face, then gave him the fist on the next page. This moment was very satisfying, as Oda was trying to communicate that it’s okay to rely on friends for the things you can’t do, as well as deliver some comic relief, which he successfully did.
[2.5] SNAP GOES THE NOES
A crushing moment for Arlong and a strong feat for Luffy, this took place a few moments after being flung up to Namis’ room. After realizing where he was, and the horrible memories it held for Nami, he took responsibility for the stress of his navigator and started wreaking havoc. In attempt to stop him, Arlong lunged himself at Luffy and sunk his teeth into his neck like a vampire. Fed up with the fight and getting serious, he grasped his hands around his nose, which I know HAD to hurt, and Arlongs pride and honor, his stone-piercing nose that even Zoro’s blade couldn’t cut at the time, got snapped in half.
[3] TO THE BOTTOM FLOOR, PLEASE
The moment Luffy bought down Arlong park. He stretched his foot out, as far as he could’ve at the time, tanked Arlongs Shark On Tooth attack, and bought down the thunder. A victorious moment for Luffy.
There were a lot of good moments in this fight. Can you blame me?
[4] CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN
Bar far the most inspiring scene/event of part 1. Seeing Luffy climb that mountain was absolutely awesome, and when I think about my life and the small things I have to do like the dishes, and chores and stuff it all seems so small compared to this, because it is small. There was a snowstorm going on, that seemed to be getting stronger and stronger, the higher he got, and not to mention he was at it for three hours which made it that more incredible. With all the elements against him in that situation, I usually think everything is easy for anime protagonists since they seem nearly invincible, but this one really got me right it in the feels. This was also a good way of demonstrating his will to do good by his crew, and to never give up. This was an amazing moment that will not lose its’ shine any time soon.
[5] PEOPLE DIE
I think this was one of his best moments because it showed his calmer, reasonable, observant side, which we see only a few times in Part 1. In the heat of his journey to stick his foot in Crocodiles ass, he had to stop Vivi and one, remind her what he was there for, and two, bring her back to the fact of reality that people will die. Usopp put it best, that ‘sometimes he hits the point without even thinking’. It was also a good way of reflecting the past that he’s endured, that he wasn’t a sheltered toddler growing up… but to realize that you’d probably have to reach the flashbacks of him and Ace, and then come back to this moment to really feel the gravity of it. Very feely.
[6] MORALS FIRST, PRIDE LAST
Do I really need to say anything here? This was painful to read, seeing Luffy getting spat on, punched in the face, kicked, and just pummeled all over. Here, we see Luffys’ morals get the best as him as he reflects back on how Shanks calmly ignored the way the guy from chapter 1 mistreated him and the bar lady (Myuki?). He let them slide with the skin on his head, but had to come back and save Luffy after seeing him about to get killed by those same people. This was also a huge display of humility Luffy showed here, refusing to even leave the area to save face from those people hurting him. Fortunately, we get to see him return the favor, in…
[6.5] POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER
I think he can punch.
[7] GOMU GOMU NO BAKA
no description available
[8] LUCCI FINISHER, GOMU GOMU JET GATTLING
Numero ocho, GGJG, reserved for popular demand, is what many would consider to be Luffys most determined moment of part 1. I asked numerous people, both online and irl, ‘what do you think are one of Luffys top 10 moments?’ and the most common response I got from them all, was this. During this moment, Luffy was in a real pinch. He was in the middle of the buster call and had to wrap up his fight with Lucci and get back to his crew, who was defending themselves against 200 marine Captains, 4 of which had Devil Fruits. In a last ditch effort to penetrate Lucci’s abominable defense, Tekkai, he goes into Gear 2, for like the third time in 1 fight, and nails a new tech he hadn’t even got to train for, Gomu Gomu Jet Gattling. A visually amazing attack as well as a great finisher of a great fight, this ends their battle and also the arch of CP9.
[9] NIGHTMARE LUFFY
Now if you’re like me and are a sucker for badass forms and temporary powerups that you pointlessly hope to see return in the future because you know they’ll never come back, you fell in love with this the moment you saw it. Nightmare Luffy imo is one of the most original, unique transformations I’ve seen in this series, as well as the other big 2. He is the result of consuming 100 shadows from 100 different pirates and swordsman of Thriller Bark, which I thought was a very cool method of obtaining this new power. With it, he gained heightened speed, jaw dropping power, and even swordsmanship skills. So basically it was the Sage Mode and SSJ of One Piece, which because of it’s 1-2 chapter use, was a much, much more rewarding experience to read through than those 2. I’m probably coming off as a fanboy now so I’m gonna stop with the comparisons. But bottom line, this one shot appearance was an amazing form and definitely one of the highlights of part 1, as well as a great way to end the arch.
[10] CELESTIAL DRAGON FATALITY
This page was an absolutely legendary, world shaking event in One Piece history. I was jumping up and down pages before we got here because I knew Oda was obligated to deliver. The man you see high fiving Luffys fist with his face was the center of hate, many chapters before this, and the entire reason the time skip even happened in the first place. He was one of the first Tenryuubito introduced, and boy did he take advantage of the title. We first saw him piggyback riding an ex-pirate before killing him for going to slow, and claiming another mans wife as his own because she was purtty. Those 2 events were very light compared to what he did later though, where he displayed the most racist act of behavior in the entire arch (which was really saying a lot), and shot a fishman, simply for being a fishman. Luffy turned around to see him in such pain, and thinking he was about to die, avenged him with the punch of 5,000 angry Kimbo Slices. The result of this was initiating an all-out Marine invasion that went beyond the force of the Buster call, the separation of the Strawhats to various locations around the world, Luffy penetrating Impel down, freeing 2 legendary Shichibukai, and the great 2 year Timeskip.

ZORO
[1] WOAH DERE BOI, SLOW DERE BOI
I felt obligated to include this because while it may not have been one of his most badass moments, it was definitely his very first. It was his hyping introduction to their first real battle (He didn’t do that much against the arm-scythe guy from the first arch), and appeared just in the nick of time when Nami was about to get killed.
[2] I KIND OF FELT IT JUST READING IT
Somebody give him some ammo, cause he bought out the guns in this moment (ba dum tssssssss). Really, I consider this moment as well as the entire chapter prior to this one one of his greatest, because he was flexing the entire time, when he took out 100 Baroque agents, among them 4 elites. Then near the end of the fight, he tanked a head on punch from the physically strongest among them, Ms. Monday and ate it like it was nothing. He was so unphased he even got right back up, and just grabbed her face and crushed it. And you know something hurts really bad when you start foaming at the mouth and pass out. So this moment was a great reminder of Zoro’s masculine power and strength, very deserving of his best moments.
[3] JUST GO STRAIGHT
I thought this moment was super funny, he was the furthest from the direction they were supposed to be going, actually moving backwards. It was the first time I saw his display of bad direction as well.
[4] SUPER SECRET USOPP STYLE: SOGE-BLADE
I thought this was a good idea, a funny one as well. Sucks we didn’t get to see more of this, but it was very memorable for me.
[5] ASURA’S WRATH
Another great moment, in by popular demand. I thought this move was really cool, but was sort of confused by Kaku’s choice of words, calling it an ‘illusion’. But still, it’s an awesome move.
[6] ZOROS’ SACRIFICE
Now this list just wouldn’t be included without his absolute best moment of part 1. It was after the tough battle with Oz and the Kage Kage guy that another Schikibuukai decided to show up unannounced, Kuma. Luffy down and out, he knocked out the crew and was getting ready to take Luffys head. Zoro, who was already wrecked from the tussle with Oz, dared to try to fight him but found out very quickly his sacrifice would’ve been in vain. So instead of dying for nothing, he decided to give it meaning and made a deal with Kuma that he could take his head in place of Luffys, a selfless and reasonable proposal. Now here’s why I was most surprised by that moment; Zoro was ****ing ready for that shit, this man didn’t give it a second thought, which drove me to the conclusion that he’s the most devoted Strawhat to serving and making sure Luffy turns his vision into a reality (and that’s not to take any credit away from the others, but just saying). This was easily Zoro’s most respectable, awesome, and honorable act of commitment to his Captain, and the most deserving moment of this list.
Not to mention he didn’t even bring any of it up after the fact, but just let it happen. That’s real man.
[7] ARE YOU LOST OR SOMETHING?
One thing I’ve noticed about the Strawhats is that sometimes their cluelessness can be their most badass quality, because it just shows they don’t give a damn about how scary or intimidating somebody is supposed to be. This moment was the most lively demonstration of this, the way he was carelessly walking down the middle of the street and just stared at that guy like he was crazy. I got super hype when he dodged that bullet and was about to go in for the kill, but unfortunately got shot back down when he got stopped.

SANJI
[1] THE SHITTY RESTURANT
The very first greatest moment of Sanji. In this scene here, he phoned Crocodile with a plan to save the Strawhats, and used the most badass one-liner I’ve heard in the entire restaurant, ‘Hello, this is the shitty restaurant’, a reference to the first time they spoke back on Little Big Garden. If you saw my reaction in that old read-through thread, you know I flipped my house upside down when I first read this, because literally ALL hope was lost, I didn’t know how they were going to get out of the situation they were in, and I didn’t know where Sanji was. Then suddenly he made contact and started the distraction. Not to mention, his words alone through a Den-Den Mushi was the first time we saw Crocodile sweat, which was a huge accomplishment.
[2] WE NEED TO TALK.
In the middle of a fight they were losing back on Skypiea, Usopp and Luffy started goofing off and playing around. Sanji corrected them.
[3] GIVE ME A HAND
When I saw this page during the Foxy arch, I got shifted into overhype mode. For the last 2 or 3 chapters prior to this, they were participating in Davy Jones’ challenge, and were getting their asses handed to them by the 3 gorilla things you see in the first panel. They pulled a real switchup next chapter, and really got their revenge by beating them all up, and winning the game. The next chapter was a greatest moment for them both, and a demonstration of what would happen if they worked together more often.
[4] SANJI THE KNIVESMAN
So I don’t know about anybody else, but I was getting really annoyed by that stupid Wanzee guy, and SUPER annoyed by the fascination everybody had with him in the SBS. People kept asking about him, almost every chapter until the Zoro vs Kaku fight, and I’m glad it stopped because I was about to pull my hair out. ANYWAY… I give Sanji this moment because he was about to make a reup, just like the above moment, and I totally didn’t see knives coming, so it was a neat surprise. I also imagine this started rolling the wheels on his bandwagon too, but that’s for another thread.
[5] SANJIS’ DREAM
To be completely honest, I was really getting to what he was saying and getting feels by hearing he lost his dream, but kind of ‘…’ish when he stated why. Still, this was a defining moment for him, and the awakening of the Super Chefajin mode.
[6]CALLING THE GOONS
I just thought this moment was cool. He was ready to go to war with those Tenryuubito guys the moment he heard they captured the mermaid girl, and starting calling operations. And it was a major event as well, since he was calling the people who would be protecting their ship over the timeskip.

NAMI
[1] VICTORY
This was a great moment that I was jumping up and down for her for, because I was glad she won her first major fight by ambition to start fighting for herself, and that she did it alone with no interference (and it had a good amount of action and fan service huehehue). Now deal with me here because I’m about to make a Naruto comparison, but that’s inevitable when the main female character at the time is doing a better job than the other. Basically, I came to the conclusion that Nami is a much, much, 1000x much better female lead character than Sakura. I won’t go into reasoning because many of you may agree, but if you want me to, I will.
[2] FRIENDS>MONEY
This moment made me smile, because I loved her sense of morals right here. I also think this was very brief, but strong character development for her to say that.

CHOPPER
[1] MONSTER CHOPPER
This moment opened a world of possibilities for me. I started wondering, what if Luffy at a rumble ball? What if he ate 2? Then what if he ate 3? Would his ‘devil’ come out of him and take over? How cool would that be to see the gomu gomu devil himself fight? That would make sense, since every devil fruit user has a devil inside them, right? Or are their other methods of calling out a devil from them? But it was also an extremely awesome moment for Chopper, since we don’t see him get very violent often.

FRANKY
[1] INTRODUCTION
Franky had one of the best introductions imo. It was fast paced and actiony. I thought his design was really cool, and his power of being a cyborg was a very interesting choice of power as well. I was really disappointed to see he wasn’t part of the movie 7 though, that would’ve been very fitting for him. But yeah, 10/10 intro and great character.
[2] DOCKING PIRATES 6
Made me laugh.

[1] I WANNA LIVE
The REAL moment she was recruited, I liked this moment. It was a turn-around from the slightly-suicidal-but-still-kind-of-cool Robin to a much more cheerful one, happy to be a member of the crew.
[2] CRACKING OF THE BACK
This felt so good to see.
