For the first few years of Naruto's publication, an annual character popularity poll was held. Readers could vote for their favourite character and the results would be included with a later chapter. The top-ranking characters are drawn together in a two-page colour spread. Some of the later polls also included a jutsu popularity poll. The most recent poll was in 2013.
Results for this poll were given with manga chapter 584.

No, people finally realized that Lord Madara is perfection. His voice is alluring, his hair is flawless, and his goal to achieve worldwide peace is undeniably generous. So who wouldn't be a worshiper of a beautiful being like Lord Madara.

Very little information was known about the characters... Can't really favorite a character when you know near to nothing about them.

Though, most people only like Madara because of his power.

I was a Minato fan after the Pain arc, where we saw him for five minutes

Most people hopped on Minato at his first FTG, Madara fanboys didn't show up until after the gokage fight
