Why I love Gurren Laggan.

Gurren Lagann is an awesome mecha series with great character development, awesome fight scenes, fantastic artwork and a good plot all bundled into one. Not many who have watch the whole series can really disagree but this isn't the reason why I love Gurren Lagann.

I love Gurren Lagann because of its message it gives:

There is none of this if you believe in yourself you can dodge bullets shit. No if you are bad at something you are ****ing bad at it, believing in yourself ain't gonna make you better at it. But what it does give is the encouragement to do better.

This is exactly what happened to Simon, he was a pathetic wimp at the start, unable to do anything without Kamina but when he began to believe in himself he encouraged himself to try and get better and eventually he became the strongest in the universe.

"We evolve beyond the person we were a minute before! Little by little we advance further with each turn!"

When you are seriously terrible at something, the only limit is rock bottom if you practice the only way you can go is up.

Take Neo for example he was only able to dodge bullets because he believed he could dodge them on the other hand Simon believed in himself to try and improve, yes some of the things in Gurren Lagann were over the top but he couldn't do them because he just because he believed, no he needed to try and improve so that he could become stronger. You didn't see him summoning giant mecha at the beginning of the series thats because he couldn't, he couldn't even produce a drill.

No they are not exactly the same thing, I will put a bit more depth on my example:

Neo was able to do whatever he wanted when he realized he was The One and that was done by belief. If you have watched Gurren Lagann you know the drills are a symbol of moving forward or a more simple term the users 'will'. Simon did not create them because he believed, he created the drills because he willed them to be. Simon believed in himself to improve he didn't believe he could win a fight nor did he believe he could pierce the heavens, instead these were goals that he would complete no matter what.

Take the fight with Genome for example Simon clearly stated he would beat him and he did, but it was not an all out win nor was it a "we believe in you" fight. Simon got his ass kicked 3 times but he didn't give up on any of them he fell down, got back up, realized his mistakes and tried something new until he finally beat Genome. This brings me back to one of Simon's speeches: "We evolve beyond the person we were a minute before! Little by little we advance further with each turn!"

This fight is a clear example of the message Gurren Lagann gives: if you are bad at something you are ****ing bad at it, believing in yourself ain't gonna make you better at it. But what it does give is the encouragement to do better.

Simon didn't believe he could beat Genome nor did he know he could beat him, instead he made a goal to beat him and practically said "**** logic, I'm not going to give up"

I am not much of fan of KLK and I personally don't think it holds a candle to Gurren Lagann.

Gurren Lagann focuses more on its motivational speeches and its deep meaning which I like.

Kill la Kill focuses more on its over the top atmosphere and not giving a **** attitude.

Gurren Lagann remains the best anime of all time and personally the best piece of fiction i've ever SEEN.

I get more everytime I rewatch. Spiral energy being a metaphor for human evolution? Genius. The most inspiring and ridiculously epic anime to grace the earth....and then they release Kill la Kill -,-

I'm one of the people who didn't really like Gurren Laggan. The rules controlling the world were very limited, and the author took advantage of it. Practically nothing was off-limits as a method to advance the plot, completely ruining any suspension. Robots the size of galaxies(?) fighting each other by throwing other galaxies at each other? The main character's pet mole thing is actually an untapped source of spiral power? Give me a break.
