Trust me, the universe is a conscious being, i don't believe the religions got it right though, once you die your consciousness, and essence will be recycled back into the universe. The proof is the fact that we are made from stardust, have you ever heard the saying "the universe waste nothing" Who knows maybe when you die you will be recycled into a beautiful star, we will all be made into whatever the universe (the creator) decides, so basically the universe intends to use everything you're made of, and will continue to reuse your essence for all eternity, and your conscious will merge back into the universes, and so will the rest of us

actually energy (which comes in form of both energy and matter(and time)) is getting lost more and more in the universe. all the atoms, all the reactions everything will be vanished in some, i dont know, like septillion years^^
the universe isnt but a huge big chain reaction of a thing we call the big bang. the common human mind wouldnt understand that. hell even the specialist cant understand that. all we can do is to do our maths up to a point where common sense seems to make no sense at all... if you get what i mean

However, an infant will never grow up, think, or feel. Thats why an afterlife makes no sense, and if its real its hell for them

about the second part. an infant of like 4 months isnt even self conscious...= he doesnt even now what existence is and that it does exist. he doesnt have any future plans and can barely think^^
