as it is said in the manga the rods have been jammed in through the pressure points disrupting the chakra flow and as hashi said its most likely rendered his body unable to mold chakra

the reason not to touch them is most likely because the slightest of nudge could affect the chakra system even more

He doesnt have to destroy the rods though. If he destroys Hashirama's body, the rods will fall down and Hashirama will regenerate without them.
