One of my favorite Animes ever is Hellsing, and I was recommended to watch Gungrave, I watched the first episode and it seems that the action (atleast the first episode, all I've seen) was much less intense than Hellsing, and it seemed to be based around Drama.
Is it worth my time to watch?
Here is the thing, I really really liked Gungrave because it was a videogame that went under the radar for most people.It couldnt really compete with the big names in the genre BUT it was still awesome and had a lot of action packed fights....I became a huge fan and when i heard about the anime later on i had to watch it.
Now to address the topic at hand i can say two things:
1.Compared to Hellsing, GG is waaaaaaay behind it.This is not necessarily a bad thing or make GG terrible since Hellsing is just top notch and very difficult to surpass.I only liked the GG anime because it helps you understand a few loose ends that were not explained in the games.
2.I was a huge fan of GG and probably expected too much from the anime, which couldn´t really live up to the insane-over the top action in the Videogames.
Bottom line, GG anime was probably targeted to a specific audience and to satisfy fans who wanted to understand a few things regarding the main character´s background and previous events in his life.
If you never played the games you might(and will probably) enjoy it, just don´t expect it to be Hellsing level.
