They're a hell of a lot better than the likes of Amy, Knuckles and Cream who get thrown in every time.

They usually serve very important purposes and have something to offer either in terms of gameplay, fan service or plot.
I wonder if characters like shadow or silver will be dropped. Sure hope mot, otherwise that would mean new "cartoon" characters and I've always hated those.
Silver? Maybe. He was developed by the eastern Sonic Team and hasn't been very appreciated, so the western developers will either tip toe very carefully around how they introduce and make him function, or just not include him at all. Though I think he's cool.
Shadow, maybe not. He was an original idea straight from the mind of Iizuka, and was first introduced through the most famous SA2, developed by the west. So they may feel more comfortable with him since he's a much more simple character than Silver. And they've already worked with him in a couple games.

And why does sonic have blue arms now?
Man, my favorite franchise is going down the drain. At least it's only for one game, I guess that's good.
Still got Zelda though.
Knuckles started lifting and I guess Sonic just got more mature and started growing hair on his arms, something I've personally been waiting for for quite a while. I'm very satisfied with these designs and the jump in maturity, they've been like 16 forever now.
The redesigns are pretty good, except for poor Knuckles anyway.
