Reuters said:
Cars stand entombed in a crystal-like casing near the deserted railway station in Postojna. Trees and electricity pylons lie felled in the snow by the sheer weight of ice enveloping them.

The damage wrought in western Slovenia by a freak ice storm and blizzards could take weeks or months to repair in a tiny EU member-state already going through its worst economic crisis in two decades as an independent state.

In Postojna, the administrative center of Notranjska region, hardest hit by the cold snap, life has ground to a halt.

"There have been no trains since last Friday," said Radenko Krasovac, a worker at the deserted railway station.

"In the 35 years I've worked here, I've never seen anything like this. I can't speak of numbers, but the damage will be huge. It will take another two months before trains can run again."

Over three days, a temperature quirk in the region squeezed between the Alps and the Adriatic sea saw rain rather than snow fall and rapidly turn to ice, coating parked cars, petrol stations, street signs and houses. Bank ATM machines were frozen and telephone and electricity lines dragged down.

Some 50,000 homes in the country of 2 million people have been cut off from power and authorities say roughly half of Slovenia's forests, 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres), has been damaged. Snow is forecast.

In Postojna, a 30-metre Y-shaped pylon had been felled by the weight of ice, testimony to the scale of the disaster.

First official estimates of the extent of the damage are expected at a government session on Thursday, but the recovery will certainly take weeks or months. Slovenia's pristine nature is a big draw for tourists.

"At first they said we'd be here three days. Now they told us two weeks, maybe even longer," said Mateusz Frym, part of a team of Austian emergency workers who came with 26 generators to help in the effort.

"We have a lot of snow (in Austria), but this is crazy, really crazy," he said.

Some of the pictures almost look beautiful until you read the report, it gets even worse once you see the video

holy ???? that legitimately looks like Aokiji and Dragon jsut had a go at each other. And people still deny the severe weather conditions caused by human influence.

I wish the small country a speedy recovery!

Global warming???

actually yes, both sides of weather will get more extreme, the summers are becoming hotter and the winters colder

that is global warming, it disrupts wind patterns, ocean currents, ...

global warming=/=warmer all the time

in it's simplest sense it means that the weather will be getting more and more extreme and there is no way anyone culd deny that is happening worryingly fast

is that the same strom that they call the strom of the century in middle east? the one that dropped snow in cairo?

i remember that strom, it was unbelievably strong at the time, but i can't even imagine what it will do in cold places like europe.

Did you really have to throw in that bit about people denying sever weather due to human influence?

There have been things far worse weather events than that, that have happened before humans could even talk. Or farm. Or do much anything different from animals.

There may have been things far worse than this that have happened during times in which humans had the ability to record weather and temperature etc. But humans are MUCH more spread out than they were just 100 years ago. As such we can observe severe weather much more. Also we have the internet now, so you can see what is going on all over the planet.(ex. There may have been a super hurricane that hit the west coast. But if it hit in like 1610, then people may not have been able to observe it. If nobody saw it, or wrote it down, or communicated it, nobody ever knew it existed.

Im not denying there are negative effects that humans are doing to the planet. I just am not going to jump and say that humans are causeing climate change. There is not enough evidence to really prove it. Humans simply have not been around and connected like they are today, long enough to witness the earths NATURAL CLIMATE CHANGE cycles. In a few thousand years from now, perhaps we can begin to truly know what impact if any man has. Because we will have been around and connected long enough, to gather enough data.

(there is no"normal temperature" of the earth. The earth is always in a state of warming and cooling.)

Simply stop looking at data of the past 100 years. Focus on the data found about the last several hundred, and thousands of years. Dont get played by this movement. There are many other reasons why man should reduce/eliminate pollution. Climate change though is just not one of them. It will happen whether you want it to or not.

Sorry for the mini rant.

It would suck to have to deal with ice like that. Also the usa was nearly halfway frozen itself earlier this winter.(more with snow than ice) It would really suck to need to go to work or something, only to find your car encased in a few inches of ice(like the last photo)

I had my car get coated in quarter of a inch of freezeing rain. That was bad enough(though it was pretty cool)

I hope these people stay warm and safe. Hopefully not all electricity is down.

Also your right! It looks like aokiji was there. I guess we now know where aokiji is currently(in this country)

It hardly snows where I live as well.

I dont think you want something like this storm though. Ice storms are very dangerous(and cause lots of damage). You would want more of a snowstorm/blizzard.

Maybe we will get some good snow later this year or next year though. We can only hope though.
