For one, Gaara is immune to genjutsu. Gaara's third eye ninjutsu creates an eye made entirely of sand. Genjutsu is created when a ninja controls the chakra flow of the opponent's cerebral nervous system, thereby affecting their five senses. Sure the sand may be connected to Gaara's left eye, but it has no flowing chakra, nor does it have a cerebral nervous system.
Gaara can pull uchihas out of Susanoo. Although Onoki did make the sand around Gaara's feet lighter, that was not the sand used to pull Madara out of Suanoo. The sand made lighter was the sand used to rush Madara. Gaara even mentions that he has to use the sand under Madara's feet, not the sand around him.
Gaara is just as much of a genuise as Itachi. He cleverly came up with a plan to defeat the Mizukage alone. He even prepared a clone for Onoki, because he knew he had harsh back pains >.> He then proceeded to single handedly take on the Mizukage
Gaara easily has more chakra reserves than Itachi. Gaara was able to survive Madara's two meteors using his special sand with little to no wounds. To add, that was after the battle against his father and the Mizukage, had a small battle against Madara with Naruto and Onoki, and held the first meteor in place with normal sand. Itachi has excelent chakra control, but as far as we've seen, Itachi can only take one heavy jutsu, has only one charge of Totsuka Blade, and can only use Tsukiyomi once before he dies from chakra exhaustion. The most he can use Amaterasu is about 5 times before that jutsu takes it's toll. My claims can all be factored by Sasuke and Itachi's fight.
If Gaara chose to make it an aerial battle, he easily solos. It's then neg diff because Totsuka blade can't reach him. He can fly way beyond mountains.
