If Rock Lee were real, he could easily call himself a Ninja.

However in the Naruto Universe, a ninja is defined as one who has the ability to wield Chakra and use Ninjustu. Before the Sage of the Six Paths, there were fighters, but no one was called a ninja until the Sage taught people Ninjutsu.

Currently, Lee has the ability to open the gates, which, even though it is not ninjutsu, it is wielding Chakra, and therefore he would fit the definition.

However, Lee was officially a ninja before he learned to open the Gates. He was called a Ninja as soon as he graduated the Academy.

At that point he only knew Taijutsu. So what defines Lee as a ninja? What defines anyone as a ninja?

It's a way of life, ob-viously.

Did you read "obviously" in Snape-style? If not, you don't deserve to be using his name and picture. U_U

"A shinobi is one who endures" - Said by many in the series.

And you'd be deaf, dumb and blind if you thought Lee hasn't endured.

There are a few confusions, the term "ninja" is a Western mutation.

Stick with the original term "shinobi" which roughly translates as male soldier. So don't confuse Hagoromo's creation, Ninshuu (Ninjutsu doctrine) with a shinobi. Modern Ninjutsu derived from the aforementioned is merely one of the many offensive technique forms adopted by shinobi.

(NV wise) Legally speaking his enrollment and subsequent graduation from the Konoha Shinobi Academy made him a Shinobi of the Leaf ...
