I doubt he just died, as far as I recall there was no legible occurrence that he was confirmed as dead, I'm not sure about Oda confirming he's alive since I haven't seen an interview or anything of that sort, but we all know Oda doesn't like randomly killing of his char (most of the time, especially the main antagonist and protagonists) and that's one thing which I really like lmao. It'd be cool if we see him again ...
