Why sand still protecting Gaara w/o shukaku?

Maybie i missed this part in the manga or i just didnt pay attention but why sand still protecting Gaara w/o Shukaku?
I never understood why it happens cuz once Kankuro said that sand is protecting Gaara on his own and Gaara doesnt do anything so maybie now hes wielding it by himself? And why he even has sand in the first place?

it was confirmed by garra dad that the reason the sand protects him is his mother love will moving through the sand to protect him not the shukakku.
