Today, after much contemplation and deciding; I think that the Rinnegan is a little bit more complex then what general opinion is.
There are two known people with the EMS, that would be Sasuke and Madara, now, to obtain the Rinnegan the current theory is that you awaken an EMS, and that you have senju dna, however I think it goes a little bit farther into it.
Now, as an EMS user, you still lose your sight on casting of Izangi and Izanmi, you can actually cast this ability with a normal sharingan, as seen with Obito vs millions of paper bombs, he used a placebo instead of his MS kamui eye, that eye was then worthless as seen in the next arc where he is sporting Madara's eye, he also hid the other one he was not using.
However, there is a complexity that kind of makes me wonder. Why is Madara able to use Susano in Rinnegan tech? wasn't this an established MS tech!?!?!?
I think Susano, is not exactly an MS ability, why? because Susano did not deteriorate sasuke's eyesight, that was actually his amatersu, sasuke had way more increased strain on his eyes due to his ability to manipulate the flames.
Susano just drains charka, now to put some basis behind this, I think that the Susano is not an MS tech, even though stated by itachi to be so as a combination of Tyskuomi and Amatersu.
I think that it is more than likely a Rinnegan tech, as susano is a spiritual and a physical manifestation. This is not a genjutsu, this is not a ninjutsu, this is a physical summoning of a sort, an armour.
I think the true way to unlock the Rinnegan, is to blind yourself of your eternal light.
Using Izangi, would blind one eye, and using Izanmi would blind the other.
I think that blinding your EMS, and having some senju dna, causes the transformation of the Rinnegan. Izangi and Izanmi are yin and yang based powers, and that the technique itself blinds you even with EMS, would kind of be a fail safe of the rinnegan.
Why would you blind yourself after obtaining EMS? not only that, but past MS users haven't ever achieved EMS before, so it is likely that Madara was the first one to realize that if he was to blind himself after getting some sort of dna from the first, that he'd likely get a rinnegan.
why is this relevant? Madara at least used genjutsu in his fight against the 1st, I believe that Madara first used Izanmi on the first hokage, and then while he was under the affects, he obtained the dna he needed, he then allowed himself to be stabbed and used Izangi to fake his death before the first. Why would the first not notice his DNA be taken? while in izanmi, he was healing with his powers, and allowed madara to harvest what he needed.
Thus, the person on top of the valley of the end at the end of the fight, was actually Madara escaping.
