He can make different shapes of iron sand but he can't use any type of puppet abilities that he may have had but didn't show. He does have iron sand's full potential though.

What exactly does Sasori need to defeat Deidara? Can't iron sand projectiles take Deidara down since they are faster than ordinary projectiles?

Yes, however, Kakuzu is here as well. Kakuzu can use Atsugai to push away Sasori's projectiles and while Kakuzu's Yūrei most definitely do indeed lack the speed to evade and react to the Satetsu spears, Deidara's bird grants Kakuzu the ability to evade some of Sasori's projectiles due to it's speed.​
