Yamato in Root? Wut?

Why is Yamato wearing what appears to be a Root jacket? He was never in Root. What do you think?

i believe he was in Root. why?
Danzo wanted to obtain 1st hokage dna...
Danzo ordered Root Member Orochimaru to use Yamato/Tenzo among 60 others as test subjects.
thereafter Yamato/Tenzo became an ANBU... from early age. (he was kidnapped and raised as ANBU) and i believe he must've been in Root at some point.
and later Orochimaru helped Danzo obtaining the Senju DNA.

i'm just saying there's a possibility and a huge chance that he could've been in Root...
he was practically Danzo's *****... not a regular ANBU
and i believe in this possibility

He must have had some business in root because of his Senju DNA, and Danzo must have known of Yamato's abilities because he worked with Orochimaru on this.

Well, this is believable but he must have gotten out of later. He wasn't actually serving Danzo in the manga canon (Tsunade was the one who assigned him to Team 7 while Danzo was simply like, "Hm, so you've assigned an ANBU captain to Sai's new team"). So filler might end up causing some contradiction.

I don't believe it has ever been confirmed or not whether he was in ROOT. What is clear is that he loves the village and has a moral compass of his own. He was assigned by Tsunade to watch over Naruto, but was given Mokuton by Orochimaru who we know has worked with Danzo. In chapters 284-286 Yamato is wearing one mask when he talks to Tsunade, then later when a ROOT member gives the assassination mission to Sai the shinobi shown is wearing a different mask. Later, in 286 we see Yamato with that same mask that the ROOT member was wearing, hinting that Yamato was working under orders from Danzo to have Sai kill Sasuke.

So, it seems that Yamato may be an undercover agent for Tsunade as well as a ROOT member, but this has never been revealed. It would clearly make sense as his mission was to watch over Naruto (protect and suppress) something that was desired by both Tsunade and Danzo.

I think that was Sai's mask on the table among his other stuff (Yamato pondered planting his tracking seeds on them).

Note how Tsunade mentions that Yamato "stood out during the time the Third was in office". So Yamato most certainly didn't work for Danzo (willingly at least). Will of Fire and all.

How else would the mask appear right in front of Yamato along with his ninja tools? It would be very foolish of Sai to bring along a ROOT mask and leave it out on a table after possibly being seen talking to a ROOT member and receiving some note.

Also, that conversation between Danzo and Tsunade is another piece of evidence of Yamato being a ROOT agent. Danzo clearly knows Tsunade chose Yamato to be the captain of Team 7, something that Danzo is happy about. To me this means that Danzo got exactly what he wanted, two ROOT members on the same team.

Yeah, there's no real evidence that that mask is Sai's but Yamato and Hyo (the one who gave Sai his mission) are certainly different people. For one, Hyo is 21 (as per databook) and Yamato is 26-27 (I think).

Obviously you can read Kishi's mind because there is no evidence whatsoever in the manga/databooks that Yamato was in Root. We can come up with speculation that would make sense but still... no evidence.

See I don't believe it has ever been confirmed that Yamato was a member of ROOT. I know that Yamato and Kakashi knew each other from being in ANBU together (which in the English translation from Japanese comes out as ANBU Black Ops, this does NOT mean ROOT). He easily could have been a ROOT member, but obviously...none of the characters would have known this. I don't recall him having spoken out about Danzo, meaning he may or may not have had a silencing seal like Sai did.

I think this is a very valid question. I'm of the belief that of all the characters we have met is the most likely character to have been in Black Ops, alongside Anko due to her connection with Orochimaru.

I also get the sense that a few people think that it is unlikely for Yamato to be in ROOT because of his love for the village, something people seem to think Danzo did not have a Will of Fire or good intent. He worked for the village, just in the most despicable ways possible. To say he was not on the side of the village is ridiculous.

I have my concerns about fillers contradicting the established canon again :| I mean, unlike, say, games or movies, they *are* supposedly in the same continuity as manga.

That's why for the most part I don't watch them. But if I do I put them in a category of a parallel universe that all those thing happened.
