Nagato is Kishimotos' greatest creation in Naruto

Nagato is one of the few character in naruto who isn't shallow as a character;alongside with Itachi.Other characters has flaws in their own ways.So this is why i think Nagato is the best overall character in naruto.

Backstory

Nagato has one of the most memorable backstory.We know why he is doing what he is doing.It's not because of a girl like in obitos' case.And it's not only because his friend and parents died.He was made to believe that he is the savior mainly by Jiraiya and Yahiko.He made himself responsible.He thought it's his duty to stop it all;the wars,hatred etc.Well finding a solution for a matter like that isn't easy.But in my opinion he chose the right way.The more practical way.Not like narutos' way of the "perfect world" where everybody live with harmony,unity and love each other.It's pretty shallow.

Persona and appearance & power

His melancholy,deattached,stubborn personality and he calling himself a god is what makes him so unique.And to back that up his appearance portraits a god.His idealistic dialogues and references made him complete.The best and epic lines of the series were delivered mostly by him.The mystery behind the character made us curious.Rinnegan was referred to as the power of god.And thinking about his journey to maturity,it's not hard to understand why he thought he is a god.It's pretty convincing.He's the only character who had an plausible ideology.There's more to say but i'll stop from here.

For me Naruto ended with the pain arc.(unless kishimoto turn around the tables and make a good ending.but from the looks of now it doesn't seem good.).

I agree with you completely... I've always been a big fan of Nagato.. He certainly was the most realistic character.

Gaara is the best character amazing backstory and consistent character progression. Nagato went through massive character regression when he killed himself. Itachi is as bland as they get you can find him in any series and he is not unique at all. After I give you a general description tell me you haven't seen this in another anime. "Cool guy" he doesn't talk much or show many emotions good looking and girls like him yet he doesn't entertain them. Extremely powerful even though he doesn't train due to no particular reason or it runs in the family. A know it all for no particular reason and knows everything in every subject. Random power ups perfect for the situation. Last but not least they are always going after a personal selfish goal but because they care deeply about it they are somehow "right" or a "good guy".

I love Nagato, but realistically on a non-fan boy perspective, Sasuke is what makes the story a lot more interesting, still a very interesting tale if u take him out but I feel like Sasuke's back story, all the mind f*cks he has to go through, Itachi being a good guy, and what we have of him now and the future of it was the best idea kishi had, honestly I don't know about you narutobasers but back in the day I was totally convinced Tobi was Madara until Madara came out the coffin so I think masked man was a better creation than Nagato I loved the story so much more cause following finding out Tobi isn't madara, you get madara going ape sh*t on the alliance one of the most badass episodes there ever was, and then we got Sasuke and Itachi vs Kabuto which was much better animated

And honestly the biggest best part of Nagato is that he was the leader of the Akatsuki and he was jiraiyas student that killed jiraiya I think that makes a big part of his character good, which u left out

Im sorry but Tobi/Obito, the suspense on finding out on who toni was was epic, the fact that in the first few chapters kakashi says he has no more loved ones, and quotes Obitos famous words, Obito represents that people who dedicate their lives to saving his friends and for the good of man will become the most corrupt of villains his goals in the end were still to benefit everyone, he wasn't a loser who was picked on and a weirdo as a kid who you know was a psychopath he had the qualities of the greatest hero, which results in the traits of the deadliest villains

Well you totally missed the point mate.I'm not talking about the powers.I'm talking about the character itself.

And for Nagato changing his ideology at the end;Nagato lost all six paths to Naruto which he never has.It might have made him wonder why he lost to a kid who couldn't even answer his question about peace.I think Nagato felt something in Naruto and that's why he wanted to share his story with Naruto.And Naruto made him remember the past him and doubt his decisions.That doubt may have made him to do what he did.
