Its been a while since ive put out a thread so cut me some slack 
. It looks scary long but each section are rather short so please feel free to read!
I will be proof reading this after i get back from the gym. So forgive any grammatical errors
This thread is not meant to fan boy Hiruzen. Rather it is meant to simply highlight some factual manga evidence revolving around him and to showcase how strong he really is. Keep an open mind when viewing this thread please.
In this scan we see Iruka referring to the Hokages faces who have had their faces sculpted on the mountain side. And stating that Hiruzen was the great of all the Kages and was such a genius that he was nick named "professor"
In this scan we see Orochimaru mocking Hiruzen saying that even he who was hailed as the "God of Shinobi" could not defeat old age. This is something I will touch on again later but for now the most important thing that you need to know about this statement is the fact that Hiruzen was hailed as the "God of Shinobi"
This is a title that has only been held by 2 other ninja. Hashirama Senju & The Sage of 6 Paths.
The fact that he has earned this title alone should clue people in on just how powerful this man was in his prime.
It is clear that in Hiruzen's old age he had become extremely weak compared to his Prime.
While under the effects of Hashirama's "Eternal Darkness" Jutsu, a jutsu created to counter ninja with Sharingan, Hiruzen still managed to track down Hashirama from within the Darkness and bind him, then seal him.
This is the first we see of his raw strenght in taijutsu, but we also see another instance. We see true taijutsu in motion when he forced Orochimaru into a position where he is left open to being sealed.
Hiruzen mastered every jutsu within Konoha. Nuff Said!
Hiruzen was made Hokage by Tobirama at a very young age. And as Iruka said before the Hokage is the strongest person in the Village. Which means that at that time and at that young age Hiruzen was the strongest ninja in the village 2nd to Tobirama, perhaps stronger. If their was stronger, they would have been made Hokage instead.

Limitations in Battle against Orochimaru
Alot of people give Hiruzen come credit for defeating Orochimaru in battle, but some people dont fully understand how great a feat this was. Alot of people saw him using RDS as a last resort unbeatable move that he used because he knew he could not defeat Orochimaru otherwise. But in actuallity he was forced into using RDS and managed to pull it off.

Hiruzen had Chakra that was so potent that when used it would dense and erupt in the atmoshpere, this can be seen from the manga image but is best seen in the anime.

Conclusion
What I am saying here is not that Hiruzen is stronger than Hashirama, or that he is stronger that Tobirama, or that he can solo the Juubi or anything. I am not Fanboying him, all I am saying is that we have good reason to believe that he was an exceptionally strong ninja who at the very least was on par with Tobirama and Hashirama.
Even in his old age he was able to subdue and seal both Hashirama and Tobirama and Orochimaru. Could he defeat Hashirama? Who knows, probably not, could he overpower Tobirama? Maybe maybe not. But was he on their level? Ofcourse...
