It says the baby elephant refused to be consoled by zookeepers for five hours. How do you know whether or not they tried consoling it with food? Do you? It doesn't say, so you can't know. So you can't say that's why it was crying.
if his own mother did that to him after he was born, are humans really that more horrible?
Yes they are in a sense. I've seen human mothers do far worst.if his own mother did that to him after he was born, are humans really that more horrible?
You're wrong in a sense. I've seen a news article of a baby falling into a gorilla exhibit. And guess what the gorilla's did.. They saved the baby and helped him get back up to his mother.Well humans have the reasoning power to know better and do a lot worse than this. So yes.
Wild animals don't have reasoning, they don't "think to themselves" or see themselves as an individuals.
They strictly act on instinct alone.

That's an instinctive reaction.
The gorilla didn't stop and think "hey I should save this baby", a baby fell and it picked it up automatically without thinking. Prime apes and Humans have very similar instinctive traits. I notice it everyday.
10/10 humans will pick up a baby that fell without thinking solely on instinct.
