We already knew that Danzo and the elders were aware of uchiha meeting in the Nakano shrine underground.The Nakano shrine have all the information about uchiha sharingan jutsu other jutsu past down from the sage of the sixth path.The uchiha clan should be fully aware Izanagi and Izanami jutsu from the shrine and their clan history stated by Itachi (see picture below)

The uchiha clan could have plan to let Itachi slaughter and let their body seem dead till Danzo or someone superior
witness it and use the izanagi jutsu to revive them.Izanagai could be activated before they die so when the time suitable,they could revive themselve,Danzo got instantly kill by Sasuke with amaterasu,susano hands,spear and still was able to revive himself.If Danzo did witness that the uchiha clan was dead,the uchiha clan could respawn to another location (like danzo did to sasuke) outside of konoha and they find a safe place to live afterward .No one will bother them afterward( until they plan their coupe better)

Izanagi is a power genjutsu that can be cast onto oneself.It control the surrounding of the individual.

An alternative plan/method
The uchiha could have use Izanami on Danzo and the elders to give them time to plan their coupe.Danzo is a very deceiful person,he will do anything to get to power and appear good amongst people.Danzo was the main driving force of the uchiha clan destruction because he wanted to control Kurama power from their sharingan.We dont know much about the older elder but izanami should also effective.

the izanagi at best lasts 10 minutes with senju DNA and costs an eye,so that wouldn't have fooled anyone,and they would have been annihilated much faster by the fodder ANBU.

well he can't know for sure,but when the time of izanagi is over the bodies should dissappear(which as i said at best 10 minutes),and since danzo was going to take their eyes off he will notice that.
