Can the Magenkyo Sharingan only be awakened by the death of someone close?

MS is unlocked by the death of someone close. You don't have to be the one who kills them, but the person has to trigger a very strong emotional response. For example: Itachi didn't kill Shusui, but Shusui's death awakened his MS. Sasuke killed Itachi, but it wasn't until Sasuke found out that Itachi actually loved him that he awakened his MS. Its unknown how Madara/Izuna awakened their MS, but it was likely stemmed from the loss of a mutual friend/family member. Obito awakened his MS when Rin died. Etc.

It is unlocked through powerful emotions so yes.

Though since they are ninja and the career deals in death its only a matter of time before someones they know does die.
And that is the usual way it is unlocked.

Nobody has to be killed though they could just pass away.

lol what do u mean, all i am saying is Kishimoto went from making it specifically you have to kill your best friend while things were a bit vague in the Naruto series, then in shippuden a lot of elements changed and we got a further in-depth explanation on a lot of things and after further explanation you have to kill the one closest to you, and then Tobirama revealed losing love (any loved one) would awaken it. eat it. and Itachi wasnt necessarily guiding him from that he even told Sasuke he wanted to make Hatred make Sasuke stronger. why would you call someone an idiot cause they dont know Naruto facts lmao get a life, get real, and get actually educated on some real shit and not naruto. you idiot.
