Living Madara was very, VERY close to being on par with Hashirama.
Edo Madara has Rinnegan/Mokuton ect, and Hashirama has nothing new.

Hashirama tells Madara no he thought they were friends

Madara tells Hashirama "I'm already at the top"

Hashirama says to himself " It can't be helped"

And then Madara slashes Hashirama/wood clone (confused atm) and says he is the one standing opposite of the LAST TIME (their previous fight).

Hashirama says he wants to protect the village that was their dream.

Madara says "You look quite depressed Hashirama, looks like this time you can't turn upon me" (In their last fight Hashirama "changed" Madara into the good side, that is what i think he is referring to)

And then Hashirama realizes the flashbacks of those 2, when Madara told Hashirama he shouldn't give up his ideals and in fact get stronger.

So at that point Hashirama realizes there is no other choice.

Madara also commented to the 5 Kages that he fought in a "Death Match" against Hashirama, so his intent was to kill Hashirama.
