The Hermit of 6 paths was an Uchiha by birth.
His mother ate the fruit from the tree of life.
The fruit looks like a Rinnegan with Sharigan commas, and it's the Yin manifestation of the Tree of Carnal Pleasures.
By eating the fruit, His mother acquired the Yin chakra or the mental energy and passed it to her new born. Thus, the Hermit was born with the eyes as the Juubi but not the body.
In the fight with the Juubi, the Hermit used his powerful ocular abilities to combat the beast, but knowing as these abilities alone won't suffice, the Hermit had to have used sage mode, or, there was someone who could control Nature energy and assisted the Hermit in the fight.
After the fight when the Hermit had weakened the the 10 tails, He sealed it inside his body. And that's how the sage acquired the body of the Tree aka the physical energy and Yang chakra.
And that's why the Uchiha ancestor was born first and was older than his brother. The sage had his younger Son years later when he had sealed the 10 tails and passed the body of the Tree to his younger Son.
There's a possibility that the older son might have assisted the Hermit in the fight against the 10 tails and written off the details for later generation Uchihas to know. On the other hand the Senju didn't know that he was actually the reincarnation of the tree. Also because the younger was the body of the tree, that could have made his older brother hate him, as he had witnessed the horrors of the 10 tails aka mad tree first hand along side his father.
Conclusion: Hermit of 69 paths was an Uchiha.
