the downside to this i beleive is that hashirama's sage mode only allows for greater mukuton and that the mitoic regeneration is merely a side effect from using the yin seal to boost his chakra levels..

I am not too sure about this. What is really well noted is that Hashirama's Sage Mode boosts Yang related abilities... it seems like a special case that doesn't depend too much on chakra reserves, but in Yang Energy.
