Lee never gave up on mental assaults of other students in academy or countless failures, he was about do it for 1 time, but Gai motivated him and he tried to be a ninja knowing that he did not have pretty much anything that would allow him to. Yes the fact that being taunted because of a minor appearance treat is way worse than having taunted for being disable and having nothing to achieve a certain goal.
