I'm also doing the same. My speech is on a major hot topic, which isn't original I know, but my approach to it is going to be funny, yet hopefully, persuassive.

As for some topics, do something you believe in. Whether it be big or small. Part of me really wanted to do my speech on how a hot dog bun can be used for everything ala Carl from Jimmy Neutron.
