While watching chuunin exam arc anime episodes, I noticed that there is a flashback from Hiruzen of a lot of leaf ninja when they were young and in their original genin teams. Amongst the teams shown is Minato's team with Kakashi, Rin, and Obito.

Here it is in the manga.

The reason why I find this interesting is that it shows Kishimoto does indeed plan ahead considerably. Their team was first shown in chapter 122, though they weren't named or anything. However, Kakashi gaiden is when Obito was first introduced, and that wasnt until chapter 239....over 100 chapters later.

I'm curious just how much of the manga Kishimoto had planned out back when 122 was released.

Did he already have the idea of Obito being behind the nine tails attack during the chuunin exam arc? What do you guys think?

Edit: I was wrong and he was actually first shown on the cover of chapter 16 as xcoyote just pointed out. I wonder if Kishi really had part 2 already planned when 16 was released...

Obito was revealed way sooner
Ha I never noticed that! I own that volume too, I don't think I've ever sat down and read through the whole thing yet though.(I had read all those chapters long before I bought the volume) Hey if anything that is even more evidence he had most the storyline fleshed out early on.

That's 223 chapters between showing the character and actually introducing and naming him lol

I bet the story took it's own life and lead Obito to be the final villain, most writers let the characters carry it away. I don't think it was planned

Ofc he plans things way ahead. Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to create such a complicated plot.
I doubt it was planned that far ahead being the fact kakashi would have Known who Naruto was and not just treated him like dirt like everyone else. That and Jiraiya would have also been there for him.

Nice find . But as xcoyote said , he was shown sooner , in chapter 16 . And the intersting thing of that was that the title of the chapter was Who are you . This makes me belive that Kishimoto has planned Obito to be a villain .

No, its almost assured that Kishi didn't plan that far ahead. Sure, I could buy Kishi planning out the Kakashi Gaiden back in part 1. That just seems like a simple case of creating a character backstory when you first design him, and then showing that backstory later on.

But if Kishi had really planned out Part 2 that early on in the game, then we wouldn't have SO MANY plot controversies and plot-holes when looking back at Part 1. For example, if Kishi had planned out what we know now, then why were the Edo Tensei 1st and 2nd Hokage jokes in Part 1, when they're clearly not now? Why was the 3rd Hokage regarded as "the god of shinobi" when clearly Hashirama is far superior? Why were we led on to believe that Hiruzen prevented Minato's resurrection when in Part 2 we were told it was because he wasn't revivable? These small details (among others) all indicate that Kishi didn't think that far ahead of the game.

Well obviously he didn't have every single detail of part 2 worked out that early but it's possible he already had the idea for Obito's character and that he would be one of the final villains. Considering he gave Kakashi the sharingan, something that is supposed to be exclusive to the Uchiha clan, he probably had a story about how he got it pretty early on, and Obito is the person he got the sharingan from.

But that was my point with the character backstories XD. Its far more likely that Kishi created the backstory for Kakashi when he made the character, and then decided to expand on that backstory later on. You have to remember that Part 1 began over a decade ago. So Kishi would have to plan out content to last him over 10 years. Its just highly unlikely.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the last chapter of Part 1 (chapter 237) was released in 2004, while the first chapter of Part 2 (chapter 245) was released in 2005. That gave Kishi a year break, so with that in mind its far more likely Kishi planned out Part 2 during that intermission.

Well, obviously. I never said that he had everything planned for part 2 at the start. The point of this thread was simply to discuss whether or not he had Obito's future role already decided early on. Not really about every single detail of part 2.

I'm well aware that was your point with the character back-stories I was simply reiterating myself. I'll do it again. Never said Kishimoto had all of part 2 planned out in the beginning, just that there's a possibility he had a general outline of the future of the manga very early on.

Yes Of course. Main Villains like Nagato, Itachi, Obito, Madara, Orochimaru were planned out right from the word go. Most Writers layout the main plot of the story from beginning to end, and then work their way towards the end. They always know where they are headed. Meanwhile, they can make minor changes such as adding another support characters or minor villains as they like. That's the luxury they have. I think I read somewhere Kishi had mentioned that he always knew how the end would be.

Remember Hawks, Slugs and Toads being depicted with Sasuke, Sakura and Naruto respectively very early in the Manga? Sasuke was shown with Hawks and Snakes. Sasuke didn't summon Hawks until the second half of Part 2. That shows how far Kishi had planned. Sakura didn't summon Slugs until a few chapters ago!!!

He was planned to be under a rock. Kishi is either incompetent at planning with the massive amount of plotholes or he changed stuff. It's only one or the other.

If Minato's no name teammates pop up and have an arc than turn final villain would you say Kishi planned it from the start? There are pictures of them.

i get kinda annoyed when people think that kishi doesnt plan anything at all. It is the JOB of a mangaka to plan ahead. You can change the future plan, but you still are gonna have a plan for a signifigant time ahead.

That said though, kishi said in an interview sometime long ago, that he had the ending for naruto planned out. Kishi plans consistantly far ahead of current events(100-200 chapters ahead)(in my opinion). The only things he doesnt plan ahead on really, are his designs. A great example of such, is the rinnegan during gaara retreival arc.(it is a abandoned design)

The number one reason i like naruto to most, is the plot, that kishi has so many twist and turns that you cant see comeing. (like itachi killing his clan to protect the village) I think to be able to do this, it requires you to be able to plan far ahead.

please....naruto has very few plotholes......most of what is considered right now a "plothole" is something that simply is not explained.

Kishis ability to plan ahead, can be represented in itachi(as he was a not yet named villian, even from the second chapter(the man sasuke wanted to kil)), and the fact that he had team minatos design pretty much almost identical......more than 200 chapters before kakashi gaiden.

As you seem upset with things kishi does, i will tell you this. This is KISHIS manga. NOT yours. He writes the story the way HE wants to tell it. Not the way you want to hear it.

Us fans, are only here for the ride.(good or bad)
