Canon episodes: episodes that are in both the manga and anime
Non-Canon episodes: episodes that take place in the anime that are not in the manga
I understand the two, but I only have a few things to say. First off, it's spelled canon, not cannon. Second, Non-Canon or "filler" episodes are relevant to the manga as well. Please let me explain why.
Fillers are merely events that took place in Naruto history that didn't make it to the manga. For instance, when Shino was offered into Root by Danzo when Torune stepped up and volunteered himself instead. It wasn't shown in the manga, yet it showed how he entered Root. He is in Root in the canon episodes as well as in the filler episodes. My point behind that is just because it didn't make it to that manga doesn't mean it didn't happen. People on NarutoBase treat filler events as if they didn't happen or don't exist. Raikage arm wrestling Tsunade. Non-Canon yet we know Tsunade is stronger than Ei. A filler explained that before the manga did and the filler was true as Tsunade is indeed physically stronger than him. Fillers are events/episodes used to develop a character or characters. Notice that we barely ever see Tenten in action in the manga. Masashi Kishimoto uses the anime to further develop Tenten's skills and personality and explain what the manga left out about her. In Shippuden, we hardly even see Hinatain action yet in the manga she's able to do the 64 Palms without straining herself. Kishimoto has developed his characters through the use of fillers.
So, Non-Canon episodes do count/matter/exist. Just because it didn't make it to the manga doesn't mean it didn't happen. Imagine how extensive Naruto would be if Kishimoto had added all fillers to the manga. Imagine how far back weed be. We wouldn't be in the Juubi Arc, not even close. So to save time, anime has all of the character development while Naruto's manga focuses more on the main characters and hard hitting characters.
PS: Another example is that Utakata was captured by Pein. If it weren't for the anime, we'd never have known that.
This has just been a little... thing... in Canon and Non-Canon. I mean no offense to anyone.
