i hav heard many saying coby is luffys rival..how on earth can he be rival to luffy??/
i like coby and all,he'll b a strong marine in future but he is not a rival to luffy but ironically hes a fan of luffy from the start.
where as on other hand smoker from the moment he targeted luffy,he is still following him and many times given a hard time for luffy(as garp gave roger) and hoping to catch mugiwara..and also a follwer of moral justice.
all dat i wanted to say is SMOKER IS RIVAL OF LUFFY NOT COBY

Rival doesn't essentially mean an enemy.... It can be a friend whom you want to compete with.... And after Punk Hazard I doubt Smoker is the rival he used to be for Luffy.... That being said.... Luffy's rival for PK title is BB and his Marine rival is Akainu.... Coby is the guy who will lead the good marines in the new era after the Great Pirate Era is over.... =D =D

Smokey does need to buff up tho,it wont make for a good story if we just say he got toyed around by luffy for a few arcs and then got a **** boost and evened out

I never felt like Luffy has ever had a rival type other than his brother to be honest. A rival is someone who challenges you to get stronger and that's usually an equal or someone better. Luffy has never had to aspire to be better than anyone else still around. Maybe you could also say Gold Roger is his rival. Oh and there's Shanks, yes Shanks makes sense.

Coby is too weak to be Luffys Rival and Akainu is too strong to be Luffy's rival..Rivals are supposed to compitate with eachother Like Shanks & Hawk eyes or Roger & WB ...I can't see that kind of relation b/w luffy and Akainu..Coby being Luffy's rival is not at all a bad Idea though Coby has along way to go..As of now smoker is a better option compared to any other character ...

Luffy's marine rival is most definitely Smoker
His Pirate rivals are Blackbeard and Kidd as of now , but if Law becomes an enemy because of recent events then he replaces Kidd.
