So both are really strong jutsu, but it is commonly known that rasengan is stronger than raikiri.
It's understandable but if you look at some situations in which rasengan didn't kill the target, you will see that raikiri would have done a much better job. While rasengan is way more complicated and their are more applications for it it is not as deadly as a raikiri.

example 1:
You must be registered for see images

example 2:
You must be registered for see images

In both of these situations a raikiri would have been deadly, because it is penetrating the body leaving permanent damage.

true to some extent. but this is due to the plot. if you look at it based on how both jutsu work they are meant to be equal
Yes it is because of plot. If Naruto would make a hole in someone with every rasengan he makes, he would be a massmurderer.(That ain't so bad if you are a shinobi)

The differencr is the rasengan does more damage in general..its more devastating. But the raikiri is an assassination tool..a knive or blade if oyou like which can pretty much cut through everything so imo raikiri is a much better ninja tool then the basic rasengan. Though the basic rasengan itself was incomplete^^

Raikiri is better than Chidori.

If you mean Raikiri, it stomps.

If you mean Chidori, it's still better.

It depends which circumstances you're using it for.

Chidori = Rasengan (as we've seen several times in the series)
Raikiri > Chidori (stated by Kakashi, the inventor of both)
Raikiri > Rasengan (if we're going by ABC logic)

Raikari is more of a piercing concentration attack.
Rasengan is destructive devastating attack.

Rasengan is more destructive but Raikari is more versatile.

Have everybody forgotten the scene on rooftop (naruto and sasuke) in season 1, when Kakashi prevents them from using rasengan and raikiri, and they clash with their attacks hitting water tanks? The techniques are different and so are its effects. The strength is always dependent on the user. Comparing electricity manipulation and vigorous chakra rotation lies in the field of their application. Of course where it is cutting, raikiri cuts the deal, but where a wide area is to be damaged, rasengan is the one.
One can say raikiri is better, because it requires exemplary chakra control, which requires sharingan, but rasengan also needed a good bit of chakra control, which was clear from Naruto's training.
Based on databook, raikiri is a S-rank technique, whereas rasengan is an A-rank technique.
I think its because raikiri requires controlling a nature manipulation and shape manipulation at the same time, whereas rasengan requires shape manipulation but no nature manipulation.

Last but not the least, in response to this quote as stated below:
but the funny thing is.. that Sasuke can't perform Raikiri :O
I would like those of you who are interested to visit this forum: and compare it with an excerpt from which states that: "Minato was unable to add his affinities to his Rasengan before he died, while Kakashi Hatake tried to add his lightning element to his Rasengan, but was unable to and explains that he created the Chidori and Lightning Cutter instead, which require a certain point of shape and nature manipulation itself."

Rasengan = Far more destructive capacity

Raikiri = Piercing attack
I think Rasengan is more versatile, despite all the comments. Please don't hate me.
1. You can use it without a Chakra Nature.
2.It is more tactical because Raikiri is using much more energy, Chakra, and effort to create, thus leaving you more tired.
3. Rasengan with a Chakra Nature is ten times as devastating as a Raikiri. You saw what it did to Kakashi's hand, even after a clash.
Ty for reading :D

Raikiri and Chidori have less shots or charges than Rasengan.
You need to be running at high speed to use it.
You cant use it correctly without sharingan.
Requires handseals.

Rasengan doenst have a shots of charge limit like Raikiri and Chidori.
Rasegan doesnt require you to be at a certain speed.
You dont need sharingan for it.
You dont need to use any handseals for it.

I would say Rasengan is better, seeing you can infuse your element into it and get a way better
jutsu than Raikiri and Chidori, due to Rasegan having a higher shape manipulation.
Even without an element I would say it is better than Raikiri and Chidori.

Sasuke was using chidori not raikiri.

Raikiri is stronger. Just look at the jutsu's ranks: Rasengan is A and Raikiri is S.

Every time Raikiri was used on someone and made a hit, it was pretty much always a KO (not counting Kakuzu, since he had more hearts).
The same can't be said about Rasengan.

The difference is rasengan is an incomplete jutsu, while raikiri is not.

Now compare it Rasenshuriken and it's clear which is deadlier.
