What made Hiruzen stronger was his raw, genius ability at all the basic fundamentals of what a ninja needed to be. He made up for what he lacked in genetics with insane skill and proficiency at pretty much all things. It's how he became known as the "Professor". Hype Hiruzen is practically the perfected Kakashi with immense chakra reserves and Shikimaru like analyzing abilities making him the perfect Shinobi.

The man is remarkable. People act like he was suppose to be able to stomp two not so full powered hokages that could sweep clans away together. The 3rd was retired before the attack of 9 tails. You do the math. His body was not meant to be going head to head with a S rank rogue ninja like Orochimaru with two past kages. His will of fire burns hotter then the sun and that is what got him through the fight. If he was even 10-15 years younger, he would have took the whole Orochimaru or even walk away after he won.
