Letting his "morsel" become a meal that he bit more than he could chew while courageous, was downright foolish on the serpents part.

The life of survival when in the den of the prey is kill or be killed. He should've realized the Hawk was nearing it's moments in his territory. Moments are vital in life, the Hawk just took it's opportunity to devour the prey he was once targeted by.
