I think he died of his injuries at home after the Kin/Gin attack, but I may just be remembering hearsay. In any case Kishi hadn't really fleshed out his character and abilities; just used him to make some enemies more dangerous. But obviously Tobirama has a whole different power level now and Kishi probably regrets the way he had him die.

Tobirama was able to survive in that coup, but it left him near death during the fiasco

Seriously... If he was killed by Gin and Kin its definitely an asspull cuz Darui soloed both of them(edo tho) and survived healthy... Does that mean that Darui is stronger than Tobirama??.. I think not

We don't know "how" he died, but we know he died to protect the Leaf as a sacrifice and diversion.
It was basically a suicide mission on his part.

it is NOT an asspull. Many Edo have been summoned and have performed poorly and they have obviously been dead for many years or don't have their entire arsenal of jutsu. Not to mention that some shinobi don't want to kill the people of their own village. The seven swordsmen were completely disgusting in this war.

Tobirama and Hashirama were summoned weaker than they were alive versus Hiruzen, but now they have been re-summoned and are much closer to their living strength. Its not a stretch to assume Gin and Kin to be revived this time for the first time much weaker than when they were living. Don't forget to mention Tobirama was in a freaking war and he was alive and obviously tired just like the sannin were against Hanzo in his own territory.

Darui versus Gold/Silver bros. was a magic something type of battle . It involved spells and curses and rituals and technicalities which have nothing to do with being stronger than your opponent.

Tobirama then realised that the only way any of them could escape alive was for one of them to be a decoy and sacrifice themselves; therefore having faith that he had trained his students well, he chose to sacrifice himself after he selected his prized student Hiruzen for the position of Third Hokage. Homura and Koharu would later become Hiruzen's advisers. After giving the title of Hokage to Hiruzen, Tobirama went off to fight the enemies where he presumeably died a noble death."

Also, Kinkaku Force =/= Ginkaku and Kinkaku. There's a chance that they weren't involved in the second attack at all.
