Probably had to do with the fact that he wasnt fully awakened or that his body is basically made out of sand which gives him high tolerance to pain, I agree with you in that aspect but I i doubt his immune to pain because the scan of gamabunta biting him sort of contradicts that.

It never really showed him in pain, just showed that he couldn't move/escape (especially with 1 arm)
