Anbu are Sickeningly Underrated

First, they're not in the ranking system, but only the most elite of ninja can join the Anbu. So that should say something. They are the ones who do actual ninja work. Espionage, sabotage, assassination, etc.
Who have they been shown fighting? S-Rank Akatsuki members? Hmm...

It's because we don't see them in action much and when we have, they were dispatched early on. The fact that being in the ANBU is considered a feat for Itachi and Kakashi to other characters should show that they're stronger than Kishi leads on.

this is true. However they just use anbu as fodders to show how skilled a ninja is. Of course their strong. Look at our examples, kakashi, zabuza, yamato, etc

It's only because they get foldered off in an effort to hype up villains. Which shows why they are supposed to be badasses, but because they get abused it brings a negative effect.

Part 1 Kabuto = Part 1 Kakashi = Not fodder. Sure, from a viewer's point they're not very special, but from a character's viewpoint they're incredibly skilled.

Like you said, They are the only real ninja in the entire manga. They conceal their identity and everything. I think they are traditional ninja, remember how Hashi and m madara was afraid of telling each other their last names? I think thats back when ninja were actually....NINJA!

Along with samurai; they are the guys who have no names, no faces they are just to get hyped as somewhat strong then get beaten up for hyping the people who beat them up. I like them because every action series which invloves somewhat militarty-like systems or organisations needs those type of guys. All hail stormtroopers.

As I said before,

Well they don't have much screen time.

The small squad of anbu assigned to protect sasuke, got owned by part 1 kabuto.
They didn't do all that much during Orochimaru's attack on the village (not that i can remember).
They did nothing note worthy during peins invasion (besides the 4 or so that was with tsunade).
Haven't done anything in the current war arc.

They simply don't have much feats, They're most likely skilled when you compare then to your average jonin. but when it becomes to elite jonin like Kakashi/Kabuto and onwards they aint that strong or atleast don't seem to be.
