Why do people keep saying the sage is an Uzumaki?

I theorize Senju is a play of the name of the tree "Shinju" which I believe is evidence that the senju surname never existed during that time. So I would say going with that logic the uzumaki clan never existed until later on.
Either way if my theory is right or not it says the uzumaki are descendants of the senju otherwise if the sage truly was an uzumaki the manga would have stated it.

The Sage of Six Paths is not an Uzumaki. Uzumaki are distant relatives of the Senju. The Sage is Uchiha + Senju.

If the Sage were an Uzumaki, it would not make much sense due to the fact that the manga has stated time and time again that Uchiha + Senju = Sage of Six Paths.
