It was because her mother failed using the Elder Son's Philosophy.

---

It seems like both options, 'power' and 'love', were wrong...

Actually, I agree with you. Assuming she used her newfound chakra for power purposes only and drew the ire of the Juubi, maybe Rikudo Sennin didn't want a repeat of what occurred with her, so he chose the son who's philosophy was not similar in that of her own.

You're absolutely correct. Also, the reason Madara was so devastated upon learning the tale was because he believed that, with enough power, one truly could achieve peace. He learned how Kaguta failed to end conflicts and only made things escalate, and it broke his entire philosophy, which had given meaning both to his life and his brother's death.

The Sage, like Naruto, believed true peace had to come from within people's hearts, and only love and understanding can achieve that.

I like it. I think we can assume that the Sage chose the Younger's Son philosophy after seeing what happened with his mother. His mother failed to bring the fighting to a permanent stop, even after she possessed a godlike power compared to others. The Sage realizing this, chose his younger son to be the successor in order to try a different method. This didn't work well either as this brought hatred amongst the brothers, an eternal curse.

Really sucks for the Sage when you think about it, seems like he just can't win.

Power > Love. Get over it. In this Reality "Love" can't change anything. It is "Power" that gives you the ability to change everything.

That makes sense, his mother failed so seeing his son choosing the same path and knowing how it would end he tried something different.

That's the point. In order to do things, you need power, but power alone failed, and this was Kaguya's legacy to the Sage.

This is the most logic explanation of why he choose the younger son over the elder one...

But the Sage failed to see the third option, to apply both.

It seems like Sasuke saw through this when he remembered Naruto in the scene where he wanted answers from the Deceased Hokages. He saw that Naruto had both options in his hands.

Of course, it's all about yin and yang. Yin alone fails. Yang alone fails. There are not like our western understanding of good vs. evil, where "yin" must be vanquished for good to prevail. according to yin and yang, that would be horrible. Yin needs yang in order to make balanced decisions. The Sage evidently preferred the yang philosophy. However, he must have hoped the elder would be an adviser to the younger, thereby balancing the younger's yang philosophy and enabling him to be a better leader. too bad that didn't happen.
Each is doomed to failure, unless its complemented with the other. This is why I think Naruto and Sasuke are going to be a team after this, trying to make the world a better place. The philosophy of each is fail alone. together they'd point out the mistakes in the other's philosophy and become what the Sage wanted his sons to be like.

And the greatest among these is love.

Power is an illusion as it can fade quickly. The kages spent their entire lives gaining power, but in the end they died like everyone else. The will of fire is an ideal founded in love and it has lasted generations.

Also, what is power if based in chakra, when the Juubi can just take it back? Where the bonds that they have built over the story arcs of Naruto are difficult if not impossible to sever as we have witnessed over and over.

You need to be wise & have enough Hatred within you to use & understand it. Madara W/Dat Power would have made True Peace.

I quite agree... there was once a time where I stated Madara was not a villiain. And I don't take that word back, it seems like Madara truly figured out a way to achieve peace, it is something that even Obito couldn't reach.

I'm thinking that Madara wanted to him to understand hatred. Obito failed, sadly.
