Madara talks of how the God Tree is just trying to get back what it lost, which was Chakra. Now it makes sense why Hashirama can use wood jutsu, as he has the chakra of the god tree, correct(God tree, lady who ate fruit, sage, younger son etc)? Now, know how Madara was hooked up to all those trees etc to prolong his life and "awaken" his rinnegan?
Why would he wait that long to strike? The Madara we know wouldn't just throw away the rest of his life in waiting he must have known he had to wait so long after being attached to the god trees chakra to obtain the Rinnegan, and it wasn't just, as it has been portrayed, a lucky accident for him. All of this was written in the Uchiha Tablet as instructions on how to return the chakra to the god tree.
