madara manipulated him (and nagato, he had this rods on his back) but he did not controll him. i mean half of his body is made of zetsu soup.

and the black rods came out of the gedo mazo, the juubis body. so its actually the juubis will in the black rods. something juubi left when he was divided in 9 bijuus to come back and take revenge on humans. to make sure someone will bring to bijuus back together -> Madara.

so the rods contains not the will of madara but the will of juubi. and its like a curse. the curse of uchiha maybe

Obito has free will and is wrecking the battlefield whilst attaining his goal.

Madara is finally developing depth as a character and attaining his goal.
