You're looking at the story at face value. In my opinion after i saw this chapter, i don't consider himself as two opposing things like you do. If anything the tree was his dormant state, while his tailed form was a state of consciousness in which it realized that someone took the fruit and decided to go on the offensive.

Watch One piece. It starts off slow but it gets alot better. It's my favourite anime/manga of all times. Don't listen to the people saying "omfg i watched the first 3 episodes and it sux (hurr durr)". Keep watching. You've got alot of catching up to do though. 600+episodes.
