I was reading some of Part 1 again and eventually came across this page.

And I thought of how cool it would be if Dosu lived and became an ally of Konoha... I mean he was one of the strongest of the Genin. He made the Chunin Exam Finals and the only people I could see having a chance against him were Gaara, Neji, and Sasuke. Maybe Rock Lee.
4 out of how many Genin could beat him? That's pretty good. And he could have grew in power and character like the others too... Or, some of the others.

I don't know. Dosu seems to have been completely wasted by Kishi

Oh my God.. When I read that arc a few weeks ago I was thinking the same thing... He was a smart one. He woulda been cool too! Otogakure truly has the most interesting characters.

I agree. Not only did he have extremely interesting [And OP] powers, but he was also one of the most intelligent characters introduced at that point in the Manga. Just another example of Kishi killing off cool characters far too early. [Dosu, Kimimaro, etc]

He was as useful as most non-main characters were at that point. He was introduced as a powerful, mysterious guy, brimming with potential, and yet, the fate he received from Kishi was extremely illogical. Dosu, the guy who was by far the most intelligent member of his team, decided to directly approach Gaara, despite having backed down to someone like CSM Sasuke. His death didn't even make sense, his character was without a doubt worthy of something other than such a ridiculous end.
