They placed Itachi in the ANBU as a spy. And remember, Itachi's the one who attends their meetings. He brought the info to the councilors, so I'm sure he didn't massacre his family if they were just going to sit down to tea and have a chat about political reform.

This was obviously an armed attack on the village. Anything else wouldn't have merited an action like this from a shinobi like Itachi. A shinobi I might add who is given the prestige of handling things as best as he can.

You attack congress, you're already in many violations. And Konoha is a smaller, secluded area. If the Uchiha were indeed planning to attack the heads of Konoha (which it seems they were), then that means they would have to then fight the jounin and chuunin ninja there.

That's kind of part of being a shinobi. Fight and uphold your village. If the Uchihas attacked and killed Hiruzen and the others, then what? The others are just going to fall in line? Doubtful.

I don't think the Uchihas were that naive to think it would go down effortlessly. Again, the sheer fact that Itachi thought wiping them all out is proof the Uchihas played hardball. They wanted blood, and they likely would have gotten it at whatever cost.

edit: But I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I see you're reasoning, and although I don't particularly agree, I can't say yours or mikeeozua's thinking is flawed. Just a difference

Lol, I can definitely understand where your coming from though, the decision of going to a coup was very irrational.

Yeah... as though Madara is completely innocent.... he absolutely didnt sow distrust among not only the Leaf citizens (The Uchiha leader trying to kill the Hokjage would not be taken as a joke by the people) along with degrading the relation with other villages (Attacking Onoki and Muu) ... not to mention he absolutely didnt send an agent who used the clearly unmistakeable Uchiha Dojutsu to steal Kyubi, raze the village and cause a Hokage's death which made the elders wary of the Uchiha etc etc etc .....

Also while Tobirama is also to blame, he had plenty reasons to do what he did.... no matter what the Uchiha tend to be unstable, so he restricted them a lil but gave them total control of Konoha's Internal Security (The Uchiha Police Force can detain and punish all but the ANBU directly under the Hokage ...... if that isnt political power, I dont know what is) which no clan in Konoha has ...... As for the so called the Senjtu being rulers, Tobirama passed the leadership to his most capable student and didnt keep it with in the clan and thats not power hungriness.

Finally, I dont think the whole Uchiha clan was at fault ..... if u have read the manga u might have noticed that the the Uchiha Clan top brass was rather pushy, they pressed their agenda on Itachi without considering his feelings so I dont think Itachi alone succumbed to the pressure from the top.
The Uchiha are indeed victims (but they are criminals too ... as their premeditated actions would have shed a lot of unnecessary blood) ... and both the Council and Madara (whose agent actually helped in the act) is responsible for the tragedy (but a partially necessary tragedy) but it did people like Danzo and Madara a lot of profit *Spit* ...
