I think it would be fun to have RP bio contests on NB. The way I envision it the person that runs the forum would select a character from an anime or game. Then everyone participating in the contest would have 1-2 weeks to create a bio for that character. The bio would follow the rules of the RP section unless special rules are stipulated. At the end of the submission period people would vote for their favorite bio. By using an anonymous voting thread a mod wouldn't be responsible for
reading the bios, and the contest would mostly run itself.
If any mod reads this and feels like they would want to run this contest please tell me. I could run it as well, but I can't give out prizes.
I'm not sure where to place this thread so I'm sorry if its out of place.
No. I will not accept any kind of weird contest bios among the real RP bios in the bio section, meaning it would need a separate section just for that contest and we're not going to make such a section for what is in the end nothing more than a variation on the fanfic contest.
These wouldn't be RP bios as they aren't used for RP and didn't get checked by a bio mod to see whether it was even an approvable RP bio (and now way in hell I'm going to let any kind of mod waste their time on that). Especially considering making it according to the RP rules makes no sense. For instance that would mean that people who don't have 50 posts can't even participate. Then I'm not even mentioning when did someone now truly 'made' a by himself? Fact is that people continuously use codings other people made and then edited them. Can you still say that they truly made the bio themselves?
These are not real RP bios and if you want to code and make stories up, you can participate in the FF contest.
I never thought of it that way, but it would give first time bio makers a "trial run" before the RP section.
No it wouldn't, it would be completely the opposite. A good trail run? How? The bios don't get checked by bio mods and following the RP rules doesn't make any sense, so they aren't RP bios and have no guarantee whatsoever it would ever be approved. If people then are going to use things like that as 'guidelines' for real RP bios, well I don't need to make it clear many of their bios would just be declined.
Do you know what a good trail run? Actually make a bio yourself without any kind of coded schmuck or excessive decorations or long histories. Simply the basic template you filled in based on what you read on how you should make a bio. Even if you screw up completely, at least you know what you did wrong and use that info to try again. With trial and error you will come to learn yourself exactly how you need to make bios. The more bios you make, the more complex you can make them. Even in the case there is something wrong, at least you have the experience to edit it yourself.
No instead of that we get a bunch of lazy people who don't want to make bios, but still want to have fancy coding (god knows why, most of those bios will be disposed of either way very soon afterwards and even the worst bios always have a parrot of two posting in it saying 'nice bio') and run to one of those bio shops of people who think they actually can make good bios. The amount of time I have lost with editing bios that came from one of those shops to make them approvable is ridiculous. Because people didn't make the bios themselves, they barely even know about mistakes that were in it, so they didn't learn anything, and the one who then actually made the bio didn't even know about the mistakes he made just keeps them repeating over and over again.
Bio shops are one of the worst things that ever happened to bio making. Because new RPers think that they also need to have fancy bios, they run to one of the shops, instead of trying it themselves, who then give them incorrect bios and when I point the mistakes out, they don't understand them. Half the time I see someone saying in his bio "credits to x for making the bio" I'm thinking "thanking? You should smack him for this crap".
A few months ago there was even an RP mod who let his bio be made by another person, however that person screwed up big time somewhere in the bio and I said it had to be edited. And what did the RP mod reply? That it wasn't possible as the mod didn't made the bio and didn't know how the coding was made. It has happened a hell of a lot of times that I even knew more about the bio by reading it once than the people who posted them. There was once a case about someone who said he knew rain, however he didn't mention anything about Amegakure, so I added that as otherwise I should have removed it, which I also said at the bottom of the bio. Then that person sent me a VM saying I was wrong as the bio did said something about visiting Ame...and he was referring to the stuff I added.
That is just sad and to cry for and contest like this is not going to help at all to solve such situations. People should simply try to make their own bios, especially new RPers who never made a bio before.
