Though im pretty sure there are breeds of dogs capable of taking down wolves, so it looks a bit weird for me that they had protection for them....maybe its just precautionary measures.

Some wolves are pretty huge and it's just in case. Just cause you're a pretty good gun slinger doesn't mean you wouldn't go to war without a bullet proof vest right? XD
