I think it sounds feminine.

I guess the way you pronounce it is a factor in it too.

Though you wouldn't initially think it, due to their culture... the Japanese often don't distinguish between male and female. This is often a point of comedy in many manga series where a character will be traveling to meet someone contacted by mail or some other form of medium where gender is not immediately obvious.

A whole two-part episode of Detective Conan was predicated on this concept (it's no wonder the English adaptation: "Case Closed" never completely caught on - the series often doesn't make much sense without translators' notes all over the place - though the series is a great series... you just have to be tolerant of the fact that you're not going to be able to solve some things without extensive knowledge of the Japanese language/culture).

That said - the name: "Hinata" is the same kanji as "Hyuuga" - meaning "Toward the Sun" or "A Place in the Sun."

It is interesting - because Hinata's name is, itself, a yin-yang balance with her character (Hyuuga Taoist theming). Her character is, generally, the rawest expression of Yin. Gentle, yielding, and non-confrontational. Yet her namesake is that of Yang.

In one of the "prototype" drawings of Hinata, she is shown in the shadow of a hill that Naruto is sitting on, watching the sun rise.

For more on what I'm talking about regarding Hinata, Taoism / Yin-Yang, etc:

Of all the characters - I'd say Hinata has had the most attention paid to the little details. There's intentional design behind everything.

Though the tl;dr version:

Apparently, it's both masculine and feminine. Though interpretations of meaning seem to be all over the place - but agree it has to do with the sun.

Chris can be used for both male and female. In Arabic, the name "Noor" can be used for both male and female.

Probably the same case in Japanese. After all, females managaka suck.

if the name of the a boy is hinata... 100% sure that boy will be gay like adam lambert or something. if the name of the girl is hinata... 100% sure that boy will be more gay like charice so pick hinata as a boy's name instead.
