Personally, I think Pain's individual bodies are too vulnerable, even if they can protect each other quite well. As much as Naruto was saved by plot due to God Realm being out of commission, I believe God Realm was protected by plot simply because 5 seconds against super-fast ninjas is actually a long time, but for no reason everyone was unable to hit him in those intervals.

Well, think about it this way.
Let's use the 5 seconds up.

1-3 you're being blasted backwards, or you're recovering from a blast.
4, you're running towards him, at any speed, he can push you backward faster than you can come back, keep in mind there are 5 more people attacking you at this point, and they have ALOT of jutsu, not to mention 360degree vision from every angle.

5- He blasts you again, or if you're Raikage speed, you've just been blocked, didged or stabbed by a chakra rod.

Just because he summoned it doesnt mean that he can use it, do you not remember what happened to him last time he used it?

Do you also not remember what madara said about not being able to control the mazou properly?

Do you at least remember that it takes all 10 akatsuki members to seal 1 bijuu within a reasonable amount of time?

All of these factors lead to the fact that pein cannot use the gedo statue under normal circumstances in a battle.

Pain had no intention to kill Naruto, or else he would have, easily, several time.
Pain attacked Naruto 1 path at a time, for some stupid reason.
Deva path wasn't used for half the fight.

By the time it was Deva v Kyuubi, Nagato had used an enormous amount of chakra destroying the village, and fighting everyone in it...
When his Chobaku tensei didn't work, he just said ' I'll make it bigger' Suggesting that he could even make a bigger one, and win.
